The GS mark has developed over a period of more than twenty years into a safety mark recognized throughout the world. Technical equipment may be labelled with the GS ("Geprüfte Sicherheit" = "Tested Safety") mark if:
- After testing of a type by an authorized, independent body, the latter certifies that the product meets the safety requirements.
- The testing and certification body monitors that only products corresponding to the type are placed on the market (production monitoring).
If a manufacturer meets these requirements, a GS test certificate is issued. The GS mark is based on the German Equipment and Product Safety Act (Geräte- und Produktsicherheitsgesetz) (GPSG).
